Hiyo ex-Izumo Maru
Launched 24 June, 1941; completed 31 July, 1942; torpedoed and sunk 20 June, 1944
450 nm NW of Yap Island (15° 30' N, 133° 50' E) by aircraft from USS Belleau Wood.
Campaigns and battles: Junyo Dutch Harbour, Aleutians, Santa Cruz; both Guadalcanal, Philippine Sea (Hiyo sunk).

General Notes:
Formerly Kashiwara Maru and Izumo Maru laid down in 1939 as 27500 GR, 24-knot 
liners for the NYK Line.  Taken over by he Imperial Japanese Navy in August 1940 and 
completed as aircraft carriers.  The fitting of new pattern boilers was intended to raise the
maximum speed by 1.5 knots, but in service, the ships seldom achived more than 22-23 
knots.    The combined island and funnel was the first of it's type in the Japanese Navy
Flight deck: 690ft x 89 1/2 ft.
