1415 0115 Emergency Turn 45° to left, to course 235°. Leading
escort destroyer reported via Task Force frequency on TBY
that enemy submarine was on surface 5000 yards on
starboard beam. She put searchlight target and opened
fire, fired two salvos. Two destroyers on starboard
side made depth charge attacks dropping six depth charges
an contact.

P.M. Continued discharging cargo. Units of Task Group 67.4

throughout the afternoon.
0220 1320 Received urgent signal from CTF-67 to get underway and
prepare to repel air attack.
0221 1321 Went to General Quarters, maintained Material Condition
Affirm. Cast off all boats alongside the ship.
0226 1326 Anchor aweigh. Ship underway to form astern of USS
McCAWLEY distance 1000 yards. Transports formed in two
columns with USS McCAWLEY, USS CRESCENT CITY and USS
BETELGUESE in that order in the left column; and USS
PRESIDENT JACKSON, USS PRESDIDENT ADAMS and USS LIBRA in
the right column. Units of Task Group 67.4 formed around
the Transport Group (67.1) and steamed on course 340°, at
14 knots.
0230 1330 Advised that approximately 30 enemy torpedo planes were
approaching from over Florida Island.
0250 1350 Commenced maneuvering by 90° turns to the right or left
on signal from CTF-67.
0305 1405 Sighted group of low flying planes approaching from over
Florida Island.
0310 1410 Identified planes as enemy torpedo planes, approaching in
two groups, one of eight and another of four. CTF-67
immediately turned away from the approaching planes in
order to expose the minimum target to the approaching
torpedo planes.
0312 1412 All ships commenced firing on enemy planes. All of the
enemy torpedo planes made their approach at an altitude
of about 30 to 50 feet above the water. Only one torpedo
was actually observed and it tumbled. The planes passed
alongside of this ship parallel to our course and in same
direction, our change of course having put them out of
position. Two bombers burst into flames and crashed on
our port side due to A.A. gun fire from this and adjacent
ships. The port engine of third burst into flames and
headed for the beach held by the Japs, crashing into the
water before getting there. Another group of nine planes
came in low over Lunga Point and approached us from
astern. Our observers reported twelve (12) torpedo
bombers were shot down by the ships of Task Force 67, and
four (4) were seen to be shot down by our fighters after
they got clear of the ships. One plane was hit by the
USS SAN FRANCISCO and appeared to crashed into her after
fire control station. Flames appeared in that vicinity
of the ship. However the plane fell over the port side
clear. The flames were quickly extinguished and any
damage suffered by her was not determined by this ship.
0327 1427 Planes having been repelled, CTF-67 maneuvered ships by
90° turns to the transport area off of Kukom.

1. On November 12, 1942, this ship was in Condition I-A, unloading
cargo. The status of guns was as follows:
(a) 20 mm guns manned.
(b) 3"23 caliber guns not manned. One gunner’s mate, and one
talker were present at each of the two 3" groups.
(c) In addition there were four .50 caliber machine guns
temporarily mounted and manned by USMC troops on board for
passage.
2. At about 1016, anti-aircraft fire on planes approaching Cactus was
observed. These planes were identified as friendly by the Air
Control officer who passed word over the gun circuits, "Do not
fire, do not fire". These planes were also identified as
friendly by the Commanding Officer and other persons on the
bridge. No alarm nor alert was sounded in this ship. However,
some of the members of gun crews of 3" guns #1 and 2 working at
forward hatches, saw the AA fire and manned their guns.
Apparently excited, they loaded gun #2 and fired one round before
they recognized the planes. "Cease firing" was ordered
immediately by the Commanding Officer.
3. The sky deck caliber .50 machine gun fired 12 rounds before the
crews of adjacent 20 mm guns pulled the gunner away from the gun.
4. The after main deck caliber .50 machine gun fired 7 rounds before
being stopped by the gunner’s mate of the after 3" group.
5. While the ship’s order relative to commencing fire, (enclosure A),
should have prevented the unauthorized firing, the Commanding
Officer regrets that he did not immediately broadcast over the
loud speaker systems that the planes were friendly.
6. Gunner’s mates stationed at the 3" groups have been instructed
that, when the ship is in Condition I-A, they are not to permit
loading of their guns unless the alarm has been sounded.

1. Normally, "Commence Firing" is transmitted from the Commanding
Officer through the Control Officer to the guns.
2. When the CRESCENT CITY is directly attacked by aircraft,
submarine, or surface vessel, unmistakibly hostile, the gunner or
gun captain may order "Commence Firing," as necessary.
3. Where there is any doubt as to the identity of the unknown craft,
its approach shall be reported promptly, and fire shall not be
opened until the craft is identified or word is received through
normal channels.
4. Guns manned by Marine personnel receive their orders from the
Marine battery officer who in turn shall receive his orders from
the Control Officer.

Subject: Report of Action Against Japanese Aircraft in
GUADALCANAL - TULAGI Area, SOLOMON ISLAND,
on November 12, 1942.

Enclosure: (A) Report of Executive Officer, U.S.S. CRESCENT CITY.
1. On November 12, 1942, this ship while in company with Task Force
67, Task Group 67.1, composed of the U.S.S. McCAWLEY, U.S.S.
CRESCENT CITY, U.S.S. PRESIDENT JACKSON, and U.S.S. PRESIDENT
ADAMS, was anchored 500 yards west of KUKUM, GUADALCANAL, Solomon
Group with SAVO Island bearing 325 degrees true, discharging
personnel and equipment of the 182nd Infantry, U.S.A., 4th
Replacement Battalion, U.S.M.C., and Battery "L", 11th Marines.
At 1320 we received a signal from ComTaskFor.67 to get underway
and prepare to repel an air attack. The CRESENT CITY immediately
went to General Quarters, maintained Condition Afirm, and got
underway.
2. Upon getting underway, this snip formed in special cruising
disposition 1,000 yards astern of the U.S.S. McCAWLEY, with other
ships of the Task Force disposed as follows: Transport Group 67.1
was in two columns with the U.S.S. McCAWLEY, U.S.S. CRESCENT CITY,
and U.S.S. BETELGEUSE in the left column; U.S.S. PRESIDENT
JACKSON, U.S.S. PRESIDENT ADAMS, and U.S.S. LIBRA in the right
column. The BETELGUESE and LIBRA (Task Group 62.4) were
discharging cargo east of LUNGA POINT and joined us by order of
ComTaskFor.67 in order to gain the protection of our screen.
Distance was 1,000 yards, interval 1,000 yards. The screening
destroyers and cruisers of Task Group 67.4 were dispersed ahead,
astern, and on both flanks to offer a more concentrated
anti-aircraft protection for the transport group.
3. The formation course and axis was 340 degrees true, speed fourteen
(14) knots and the task force began maneuvering in accordance with
90 degree turn signals from ComTaskFor.67, O.T.C., in the U.S.S.
McCAWLEY as soon as the special cruising disposition was formed.
4. At 1355 we received, via TBY radio, the information that
approximately thirty (30) enemy torpedo bombers were approaching
from over FLORIDA ISLAND, and were still about fifty (50) miles
distant, due over about 1415. The sea was calm with broken clouds
to the Westward. To the Eastward hazy rain clouds hung low over
the islands. However, FLORIDA ISLAND was plainly visible.
5. The CRESCENT CITY had the following batteries manned: One (1) -
5"/51 Cal. gun, four (4) - 3"/23 Cal. guns, four (4) - ,50 Cal.
machine guns, and eight (8) - 20mm anti-aircraft guns. The
.50 Cal. machine guns were manned by personnel of Battery "L",
11th Marines.
6. The attack developed as follows:
At 1405, sighted two groups of enemy planes approaching in Vee
formations of eight (8) and seven (7) planes respectively, from
over FLORIDA ISLAND and at an altitude of a few hundred feet,
bearing 055 degrees true, distant about ten (10) miles.
Immediately after passing over FLORIDA ISLAND, they lost altitude
rapidly and came down to a level of approximately thirty (30) to
fifty (50) feet above the water surface. The planes approached
the transport formation from a bearing of about 160 degrees
relative and as they neared this ship, were flying very fast and
close to the water. The formation axis was 340 degrees true, and
the coarse was 250 degrees true at the time of the actual attack,
the Task Force Commander having turned away from the approaching
planes so as to expose a minimum target. The planes were met
first by the fire of the screening ships which scattered the
formation and by the time the planes, which came within range
of our guns, were near enough for the guns to open fire, they were
paralleling and going in the same direction as the formation. The
CRESCENT CITY was the center ship of the left column of the
transport formation. The planes attempted to pass us and get
clear of the formation. During the action only our port
batteries, composed as follows, fired on the enemy planes: two (2)
- 3"/23 Cal., one (1) - 511/51 Cal., two (2) - .50 Cal. Machine
guns, and four (4) - 20mm anti-aircraft guns, a total of nine
guns.
7. Only three (3) planes came within machine gun range of this ship,
and they passed along; the port side close aboard. At about 1412
fire was opened on the approaching formation by all ships
simultaneously, including the CRESCENT CITY. Personnel of this
ship saw only one plane release a torpedo. The torpedo was
observed to hit tail first, skid, and dive. From the records kept
by an Officer Recorder on the Bridge, the Quartermaster’s
Notebook, and from individual reports of the various battery
officers, the CRESCENT CITY and adjacent ships shot down two and
damaged a third bomber (identified as Mitsubishi 97’s) which
attempted to land on the Jap held beach on GUADALCANAL. This
plane crashed into the water before reaching the beach. A total
of twelve (12) bombers were seen to be shot down in the transport
area by the ships of Task Force 67 and by fighters based on
GUADALCANAL.
8. During and particularly after the attack, several dogfights were
observed and several planes were seen to crash into the sea
and on GUADALCANAL. One P-400, U.S. Army type airplane made a
crash landing in the water about one-half mile astern of this
ship. The pilot was rescued by one of the boats from the
transport unloading area off. KUKUM.
9. Shortly after the action commenced, a plane was seen to be hit by
gun fire from the U.S.S, SAN FRANCISCO and appeared to crash into
her after fire control station. Flames appeared in that vicinity
of the ship. The flames were quickly extinguished and any damage
suffered by her was not determined by this ship.
10. At 1427, the enemy planes having been repelled, the transports
were maneuvered back to the unloading area and unloading
operations were resumed shortly after 1525. At 1528 this ship
secured from General Quarters and set Condition I-A, Material
Condition Afirm continued. During the complete action the
majority of this ship’s landing boats were in the water and
maneuvered clear of the landing beach but in the unloading area.
11. During the above action, the conduct of all officers and members
of the crew and of such Army and Marine personnel that still
remained on board, was excellent in every respect. The fire of
the .50 cal. and 20mm batteries was particularly effective.
12. The report of the Executive Officer of this ship is included as
enclosure (A).

1. At about 1410 on November 12, 1942, this ship, in company with
the USS McCAWLEY, USS PRESIDENT JACKSON, USS PRESIDENT ADAMS,
USS BETELGEUSE, and USS LIBRA, was in action against Japanese
planes off Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.
2. The ships listed above were discharging cargo to the beach near
Kukom, Guadalcanal, about 1315, on November 12, 1942, when word
was received that thirty enemy planes were approaching and would
reach us about 1400. The ships were immediately gotten underway
and were maneuvering west of Lunga Point information when
the planes arrived.
3. The planes, which appeared to be an improved model of the
Mitsubishi twin engine torpedo bomber, Type 97, approached
from about midway between Savo and Florida Islands, on a bearing
of 055° T. They appeared to be 150 or 200 feet above the water in
an uneven line. When they approached our outer screen, they
divided, one part going around to our right hand and the other
part to our left hand.
4. Three or four enemy planes flew close alongside this ship on our
port hand. We fired on all these planes. The first plane burst
into flames as she passed our fantail and shortly afterward
plunged into the sea. The second plane crashed into the sea about
on our port beam, but was not on fire as I remember. I did not
see what happened to the third and fourth planes.
5. I definitely observed six planes shot down in various sectors, and
am quite certain that the CRESCENT CITY shot down or assisted in
shooting down the two planes on our port hand. I could clearly
see tracers from our after 50 caliber and also from our skydeck
20 millimeter guns entering the two planes.
6. I also observed an enemy plane fall in flames on the stern of the
USS SAN FRANICISCO, starting a fire which was soon brought under
control. I did not see any torpedoes dropped, nor did I observe
any enemy machine gunning.
7. While at anchor before the plane attack, a shell from the enemy
shore battery, apparently five or six inch, fell about 100 feet
from the ship on our port quarter.
8. The conduct of the officers, crew and the Army machine gunners was
excellent throughout.
9. I did not observe any individuals deserving of especial praise or
censure.

Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships
U.S.S CRESENT CITY AP-40
Crescent City (AP-40) was launched 17 February 1940 as Del Orleans by
Bethlehem-Sparrows Point Shipyard, Inc., Sparrows Point, Md., under a
Maritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs. M. L. Pedrick; acquired by
the Navy 9 June 1941; converted at Alabama Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Co.,
Mobile, Ala.; and commissioned 10 October 1941, Commander W. C. Calhoun in
command. She was reclassified APA-21, 1 February 1943.
Departing Norfolk 15 December 1941 loaded with troops and equipment Crescent
City debarked her passengers in the Canal Zone, then sailed to San Diego to
load Navy and Marine passengers for Pearl Harbor. She carried civilian
evacuees back to San Diego, returning immediately with workers and equipment
to rush repairs of the damaged naval base at Pearl Harbor. Assigned to
transport men and equipment to set up the advanced base at Efate, New
Hebrides, she voyaged on this mission until arriving at San Diego 22 April
1942 for a brief overhaul.
On 1 July 1942 Crescent City sailed from San Diego bound for the initial
assault landings on Guadalcanal. Landing her troops 7 August under heavy air
attack, she splashed at least four of the enemy planes. For 2 days she
remained at anchor unloading the necessary supplies to hold the beachhead,
then returned to Espiritu Santo to unload material to set up a new forward
base to supply the Guadalcanal operations. Sailing from Brisbane, Australia,
and Wellington, New Zealand, to the advanced bases at Noumea and Espiritu
Santo, then dodging enemy forces to deliver men and equipment to sway the
balance toward victory on Guadalcanal was Crescent City 's mission through
the next few months. When the offensive began to swing north through the
Solomons in early 1943, she continued her transport duty to the base
established on hard-won Guadalcanal. On 13 August, while unloading, she aided
in repelling an air attack in which John Penn (APA-23) was sunk.
On 28 October 1943 Crescent City sortied for the invasion of Bougainville,
landing troops at Empress Augusta Bay under air attack 1 November. On the
13th, after helping repel a torpedo bomber attack, she landed support troops
brought from Tulagi and Port Purvis. Continuing her inter-Solomons transport
and resupply duty, she took part in the assault landings on Emirau Island on
11 April 1944 and reported to Guadalcanal 30 April to prepare for the
Marianas operation.
Crescent City was held in reserve during the assaults on Kwajalein and
Eniwetok, then landed her troops and embarked casualties at Guam from 21 to
25 July 1944. She returned to Guadalcanal 16 August for the staging of the
Palau operation, taking part in the landings on Peleliu 15 September. Ten
days later she arrived at Humboldt Bay, New Guinea and sailed on 16 October
for the invasion of Leyte. After landing troops of the 6th Army at San Pedro
Bay 22 October, she sailed before the outbreak of the Battle for Leyte Gulf.
The transport brought reinforcements to Leyte from Hollandia, and arrived at
Manus 20 November to embark passengers for the United States.
After overhaul, Crescent City departed San Francisco 25 February 1945 and
arrived at Pearl Harbor 4 March. Here she was converted to a temporary
hospital evacuation ship, and 2 weeks later was underway for Kerama Retto,
arriving 6 April. Receiving casualties from the beaches of Okinawa and from
other ships, she transferred them to Hope (AH-7) for evacuation. Crescent
City remained at Okinawa receiving casualties and transients until the end of
the war.
Aiding in the redeployment of troops for the occupation of China, Crescent
City lifted the 1st Marines to Taku between 30 September and 6 October 1945,
and carried Chinese troops from Hong Kong to Chinwangtao and Tsingtao in
November. Returning to Okinawa 1 December she embarked men eligible for
discharge and sailed for Seattle, arriving 20 December.
Departing Seattle 23 January 1946 Crescent City arrived at Norfolk 14
February. She operated from New York and Norfolk on training duty in the
Caribbean until 10 October 1947 when she sailed for the west coast. Arriving
at San Francisco 1 November, Crescent City was placed out of commission in
reserve 30 April 1948 and transferred to the Maritime Commission 3 September
1948.
Crescent City was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for her outstanding
performance throughout World War II, and received 10 battle stars.
